Ready Is Not A Feeling. It's a Decision.

Waiting, fear, and choosing to begin anyway.

“One day…”

“When things calm down.”

“When I have more more time.”

“When I feel more confident.”

“When everything is in place.”

Sound familiar?

Here is what I know as a psychologist: those statements feel logical. Responsible, even. Like you are being realistic about your circumstances and waiting for the right conditions before you take the big step.

I also know that a lot of the time, these statements are based in fear. Fear disguised as logic and reason.

The Myth of Readiness

There is this widespread belief that we as humans achieve the feeling of readiness and that is our sign that it is time to make our move. We have been convinced that one day the stars will align, the anxiety will quiet down, the timing will be perfect, and we will just know that we are ready. And when that finally happens, then we will begin.

But the truth is, that moment rarely comes.

Not because our circumstances never change or improve, but because readiness is not something that arrives. Usually, readiness is something that develops through action.

The confidence you are waiting to feel before you start? It comes from starting.

The clarity you are waiting for? It comes from doing.

Waiting to feel ready is, in most cases, just waiting.

How long have you been waiting?

Has the waiting made you feel more ready?

Or have you just become more comfortable with not trying?

What Fear Looks Like In Disguise

Fear doesn’t always show up and announce itself. It isn’t always a fast heartbeat, sweaty palms, and a pit in your stomach.

Sometimes fear looks like perfectionism. Waiting for things to be “just right” before you begin.

Sometimes fear looks like telling yourself that you are just being reasonable. Thorough. Responsible. Realistic. Without recognizing that by not starting, you are protecting yourself from the possibility of not achieving success.

Sometimes fear looks like overthinking. Researching, planning, preparing indefinitely. Always finding one more thing to review before getting started… because thinking feels safer than doing.

Sometimes fear looks like waiting. Waiting for a better time. For a less busy period of life. For security. For reassurance. There will never be a perfect time. Life has a way of staying busy and complicated. But just because life is busy and complicated, that doesn’t mean you can’t make the change you have been wanting to make.

These experiences might not feel like fear the way it normally shows up. In fact, they might feel like good reasons to wait. And sometimes they are. But there will always be a reason to wait. And if we are always looking for a reason to put off the dream, we will always be waiting.

A Few Questions Worth Sitting With

What is the thing you keep telling yourself you will start when you are ready?

How long have you been waiting to feel ready for it?

What would you do differently if you knew that the feeling of readiness was never going to arrive before you got started?

What is the smallest possible first step you could take today?

What are you actually afraid of?

That last question is usually where the real answers live. Timing and circumstances and logic all come down to one central element — the fear underneath it all. The fear of failure, of judgment, of discovering that you tried your hardest and it still wasn’t enough.

Your fears are valid. They are also never reason enough to not try.

Ready Enough

You do not have to feel ready. You just have to decide.

Decide that the waiting no longer serves you.

Decide that small, unsteady, imperfect action steps are better than perfectly calculated inaction.

Decide that you are willing to be uncomfortable, uncertain, and even a little bit scared… and do the thing anyway.

This is what readiness actually looks like. A choice to move forward despite the fear that tempts us into complacency.

You are allowed to be scared.

You are allowed to be uncertain.

You are allowed to not have it all figured out.

Do it anyway.

Try. Take that step. Choose yourself. Be brave.

The conditions may never be perfect. The timing may never be ideal.

You, exactly as you are right now, with all of your uncertainty and imperfection… You are enough. Strong enough. Brave enough. Ready enough to take that first step.

What are you waiting to feel ready for?
